Cougars Roll in Boulder
W 47-26 - WOW!

How many of us thought that Matt Kegel was the worst Cougar quarter back ever?  While Drew Bledsoe's place at the top of the Cougar pantheon is secure, Matt is not nearly as bad as we thought, and he might be just good enough to get us back to the Rosebowl.    The answer on that question will have to wait.

For now, we know that this defensive team is a gem.  Lord only knows how good they would be if a certain defensive lineman hadn't left early for the NFL.  They looked very similar to the Seattle Seahawks this weekend, didn't they?  Flying all over the place the cougars were hitting hard  - as one reporter said:

"The Buffs receivers ended up with such a case of short arm syndrome that they had to get new jerseys at half time just to see their hands!"  Quote from an unnamed - oh what the hell, it was me.

Colorado folded like a second division team, not the 17th best team in the country.  You could actually SEE the intimidation set in as the game went on.  When was the last time you saw a cougar team do that?  We've seen the Huskies do that to teams for years, we've seen them do it to US.  So now we have a team with a great defense, a number one running game with that blows people off of the ball (with several good running backs to choose from), and a quarterback that needs to be very good, but not great for the team to win.  What other team in Washington does that remind you of?  I think that if you get rid of a couple penalties, this would be the type of team that DON JAMES would be proud of, don't you?  They certainly are developing a Don James type of attitude and swagger.  We'll find out on September 27th, when the Cougs  take on the Oregon Ducks in Eugene.

First, there is that pesky New Mexico game.  It has let down game written all over it, but since BYU only beat them 10-7 last Saturday lets hope our players sit up and take notice.  New Mexico has a defense that is good, even if they have very little offense.  Figure on a low scoring game unless the cougars continue their defensive turn-over spree - if that happens we could end up with  a slow start and the Cougs pulling away at the end of the game.  The rest of the schedule is tougher, seems like all of the really hard games are not in our stadium.  If we win out it will be that much more impressive.

The wild card in this is Matt Kegel, who has a Jekyl and Hyde quality, showing both signs of greatness and the ability to let his nerves get to him at key moments.  Lets hope that he can piggy back on Bill Doba's attitude and convince himself he is the best cougar Quarterback ever.  That attitude would go along way towards making it so.  You know what they say at Boeing, "attitude determines altitude!"
